2019 – 2020
A strong intuition, a clear ambition
Our story starts with an observation: waste management is still complex, costly, and hard to steer.
Viviana and Nicolas decide to give it their free time, their ideas, and their energy. Evenings in the field, meetings with industry players, first hypotheses… No certainties — but a tenacity that lays methodical foundations for the future project.
The first incubators confirm the potential, and the vision sharpens: bring data, intelligence, and prediction where there is none.
2020
First innovation, first pivot
A first prototype capable of measuring bin fill levels comes to life.
After early tests and feedback, a pivot is chosen — to tackle the core issue: professional waste, over 50% of which is never recovered.
2021
Official founding and decisive technology choices
Akanthas is officially founded in April 2021, driven by a first industrial client. This first experience highlights a clear need: go further technologically.
AI and image processing emerge as the natural path.
From that summer on, Akanthas kicks off its first visual-analysis work. Cameras, first engineering interns, manually produced reports… Every step builds priceless expertise. The first bricks of the future AI model are laid one after another.
2022
The pivotal year
To connect AI and waste, one key element is missing: data. In three weeks, the team builds its own annotation tool and the first Akanthas back-office.
Veolia signs a first installation. The lessons are many: tough conditions, unstable hardware, the need for deeper engineering.
Here again, no giving up: a strategic decision is made. Akanthas will develop its own sensor, designed for the demands of the field.
At the same time, presence at the Pollutec trade show confirms the obvious: the market is waiting for a technology like Akanthas.
2023
Refinement
The first Akanthas sensors are deployed with Spie. Every intervention strengthens the design’s robustness.
On the software side, the teams progressively stabilize the entire chain — from backend to update delivery.
The company structures itself: quality processes, standardized deliverables, team reinforcement.
These advances lead to signing a major contract with Suez.
Despite production challenges, every obstacle accelerates the industrialization of the solution. A new specialized partner is selected to evolve the sensors toward demanding industrial standards.
2024
The industrial turning point
From early 2024, the sensors are deployed on large-scale projects — sometimes in highly demanding environments.
In the spring, a crucial milestone is reached: the system starts automating part of the analyses.
During the year, a new supplier helps achieve unprecedented levels of quality and stability. The solution reaches a new stage of industrial maturity.
2025
A solid technology and a clear ambition
Akanthas is now stronger, more structured, more ambitious — with a tight-knit team, a proven technology, and industrialization in motion.
